interview

I had my first interview with a publishing company this morning and I'd say it went rather well. It was great to talk with two ladies who are professionals in the field. I learned that I would be working on the productions editorial team, doing everything from casting a vision of a book to arranging the library of congress numbers to correcting master copies of books. The more they talked the more my excitement grew. If I get this internship I'll be in Washington D.C. no later than September 13th.

After this I went with my friend Lizz to the Huntington Beach farmer's market. We had a tun of fun dancing to music, trying free fruit samples and looking at all the fun things to buy...including the peanut butter oatmeal cookies. She donned the baby bjorn and Eli had a blast too.

Oh yeah, did I mention is awesome outfit?

day in pictures

I love pictures of people. There is so much life in the world.

open doors

My house is full of people and music.

I think I've written this before, but I can say it again. I want to always surround myself with singer/songwriters. It's one thing to know how to play the guitar, but another completely to write lyrics, compose music and bring people together through it.

This house has been a people house. I think back on this last year and I can't remember how many people have slept on couches, beds, floors. No idea how many have cooked and eaten in our tiny tiny kitchen. How many cups of tea? How many movies or nights around the fire? Even in the week of our moving out there are new faces tonight.

big girl job

Many of you know that I am in search of an internship. After a bit of applying and emailing, I hadn't heard anything back and yesterday was becoming slightly discouraged.

This morning I went to Kean with Bethany and halfway through a conversation (that I don't think we ever finished) my phone began to ring. "202, huh I think I should pick it up". The delightful woman on the other end explained that she was from Island Press and began to ask if she could set up an interview with me. This is the company I was really excited to find about two weeks ago. This is the company in Washington D.C. This is the first thing I've heard back from anyone.

The look on Beth's face mirrored my growing excitement.

It hit me this afternoon that this is actually real. That the job I want to one day have is finally starting to take form and become a reality. The last person who had this internship moved up in the company. It would be four months in D. C. and then who knows what from there. I'm trusting with all the details.

I went out and got myself an interview outfit today at H&M.

But for now I'm at the Ritz in Dana Point, watching cartoons with a very sleepy little boy. The sunset over the Pacific was beautiful tonight, if anyone was wondering. For me, I'm about to start submitting more resumes. For him, time for bed.

I love

my church family. I have been helping out a little this week at our VBS. How amazing it has been to watch a gifted and passionate group of people come together and put this on! Not only that but laugh and enjoy time together while doing it. Oh yeah, and if you were wondering, yes that is a ship on the stage.

I am a bee

Lately I have felt as if my time is racing away from me. Maybe it's just another one of those seasons in my life but for some reason the days go by with an irritating speed. Most of my time is spent working, saving money feels like an important thing in the next stage of life. I am at church often, or spending time with the people there but yet it seems as if I am still missing important events due to work. Then there are other things in my life that have fallen by the wayside. Books- I haven't finished a book in the last two months, something that scares me a little. I have had sweet little time to work on and push through searching for an internship. When I am I remind myself that I should study for the GRE that I would love to take this fall. Yet of course amongst these things when do I have time to look for a car? While I drive to work an hour early to find a parking spot?

There are friends I think about often yet with the days passing by so quickly I can't seem to find gaps in my "busy" schedule to spend time with. I don't feel like I'm busy. I also feel, lately, that so many people around me are going on trips and doing fun things and I.... am not. I partly feel like I shouldn't leave because I miss so many things going on here. Except I am missing them anyway.

My boss called this afternoon and asked if I would come in tonight– I told him no.

the hoppy hopkins

Tonight is the first night I will sleep in my own bed in...wow has it really been 5 nights?

I have been staying in Huntington with a friend, Lizz, who lives about 2 blocks from the ocean. Her home is beautiful and she shares it with the most wonderful of little boys. Eli (see below) and I have become good friends and it has been such a blast this week to hang out with the both of them.

Activities this week included: not sleeping in, pj's until lunch (for all), waffles, drives to church, dancing around to good music, errand runs, walks to get chai, not showering, sloppy joe dinner, cleaning, puking (for Elijah), watching movies, writing cover letters (for me), and having friends over.

We slept in a California King sized bed, with feather down everything. It was a wonderfully relaxing few days and a bit of a retreat for me.

Crazy busy weekend ahead.

i'd like to be an editor

The never ending search for internships continues. Currently I am looking in San Francisco/Bay Area, Washington D.C., and San Antonio/Austin. In these three areas I have people who are willing to provide me with an inexpensive place to live. That being the main draw for each as I'd like to not go bankrupt in the next six months.

Some days I am excited to look and apply, yet other days I spend two hours searching with no luck. The internet is convoluted with unhelpful information.

I read once that stories begin with and inciting incident. Rarely does a character set out on an adventure, or change their course, without any reason. With August 31st quickly approaching, I will soon become a vagrant, free to wander where I will.

lavender lounge

Spent the afternoon with a friend in San Clemente and let me tell you my senses are on serious overload. Chocolate, antique shops, clothing boutiques, book stores and tea- all on one little street near the ocean.

She took me to a beautiful upstairs nooklike tea room called the Lavender Lounge where a curly haired man told us all about the teas they have. The entire back wall is lined with loose leaf teas to smell and purchase and we sipped such extravagance while sitting at a little bar in front of the window that overlooks Del Mar avenue.

I also had a lemon bar. Delicious.

It was the kind of place you have to look for in order to find, a little nook the size of a studio apartment. There is a sister location in Dana Point that I'd like to check out. Hint: The Long Beach tea, delightful.
